With so many supermini cars coming on to the market, it can be hard to pick the right one that will offer superb reliability and performance.

My choice would be the Volkswagen Polo. It was first launched in 1975 and is still going strong, so you can be sure of reliability. But what's the performance like?

There are several engine options available; a 1.2 litre petrol engine with 60 or 70bhp and a 1.4 litre with 85bhp. There is also a 1.2 litre TSi turbo petrol engine with 105bhp, the most powerful model. Diesel engines include a 1.6 litre with either 75 or 90bhp. A 1.2 litre three cylinder diesel engine features Bluemotion technology, making it hugely economical.

Emissions from the Bluemotion Polo are as low as 91g/km of CO2 and it returns 83mpg. Even the least efficient engine, the 1.4 litre, emits 139g/km of CO2 and returns 47.9mpg.

The Polo is a solidly-built car. It achieved the full five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests and is one of the safest cars in its segment. Safety features include four airbags, an Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) and anti-lock brakes (ABS). Equipment on the range-topping SEL models include ambient lighting, leather interior trim, tyre pressure monitor, alloy wheels and a multifunction trip computer.

The Volkswagen Polo is a fun car to drive, but also a grown up car and feels much bigger than it actually is. The boot has 280 litres of space which expands when the rear seats are folded down. It offers a wonderfully comfortable drive and overall is a charming car in which to do your travels.

If you're looking for a used Volkswagen Polo Birmingham, there are some great deals to be had. Contact your nearest VW dealer for information.
