Buying used cars in Northern Ireland can be a confusing business. There is so much to consider to ensure you make the right choice. I'm quite lucky in that I have a partner who knows a lot about cars, otherwise I could be buying all manner of doughnuts!

There are many sites offering tips and advice for buying a used car, but how do you know whose advice to take? I have put together some myths that exist about buying used cars, and what the facts actually are.

1) Once you have paid for and collected your car, you may still not be the owner of the car. The registered keeper is not always that legal owner of the car. If the car was stolen, it still belongs to the original owner If it still has finance owing, the car belongs to the finance company.

2) If the car is advertised at a very cheap, and looks too good to be true, then it probably is! The low price of the car could reflect all manner of nasty problems lurking under the bonnet. Be careful.

3) All cars these days are the same, they are just as reliable as each other. Not the case, I'm afraid. Do your research before buying a used car. Did you know for example that a Land Rover is six times more likely to break down than a Honda?

4) Buying a used car from a dealer is more expensive, but they will give me a warranty. This is not always as reassuring as it might sound. Most warranties are only about 3 months long, and cover certain parts failing and not wearing out. If you buy privately you could use the money you save from the actual cost of the car, to take out an independent warranty.
