With money saving at the top of most people's priority list at the moment, people are looking at ways they can save money on one of the most expensive items to own, your car.

We drive a small 1.0 litre, three cylinder engine car, which should be fairly inexpensive to run, but we still find ourselves spending 50 a week on fuel, plus there is MOT and servicing costs and not forgetting insurance costs, too. If we were driving a larger car, like a Volvo, costs would be even higher and so we would definitely visit a garage that carries out Volvo servicing Leicester.

Servicing may seem like an unnecessary thing to do when you feel like your car is running perfectly fine. But, in fact, it could save you a lot of money in the long term.

Servicing your car regularly will make your fuel last longer, by as much as 10 per cent. Cars that have not been serviced can cost 100 more annually on fuel. You can take your car to a local garage or directly with the manufacturer. If you go to an independent garage, make sure it's VAT registered and genuine parts are used. Following new regulations that came into force in 2002, having a service at a non-franchised garage will no longer affect your warranty.

You should get your car serviced at least once a year. You would also benefit from having a winter service however to make sure your car is equipped to deal with harsh weather conditions. Make sure your book is stamped very time you have a service, otherwise your car's resale value could drop.

There are a number of things you can do yourself to help to reduce fuel costs. Firstly, check your tyre pressure, this could save you up to 100 per year. Also make sure you regularly check your oil level. Inadequate oil levels can cause extensive damage to your car.
