Popularity of the 'supermini' or 'city car' has grown considerably over the last few years. Fiat certainly played the game well with the introduction of the Fiat 500, a revamp of an old Fiat model that I used to point and laugh at whenever I was on holiday on the continent. The new one's not as funny though. In fact, I'd love one.
The 500 was so successful, that it's slightly older brother, the Fiat Punto, became a little overshadowed and probably experienced a little sibling jealousy. But the Punto is a great little car. It's larger than the 500, a solution for those that might feel a little silly driving around in the 500.
The Punto began life in 1993 and has had a number of facelifts over the years. The new generation Punto Evo has a lovely curvaceous bodyshape that makes it both cute yet stylish. There are a range of engines available, including an eight-valve 1.4-litre petrol which is the entry level unit and three more petrol engines that have Fiat's Multiair air-intake technology. The Sporting trim provides a power output of 134bhp, but if you want a bit extra you should try the Abarth version, Fiat's tuning company, which has 163bhp. There are also two turbodiesel engines with either 47 or 94hp.
If fuel efficiency is high on your list of priorities, you'll be glad to know that the Fiat Punto has an engine stop-start system as standard. This helps it to achieve approximately 50mpg in petrols and 70mpg with the diesels. If you're looking for a Fiat Punto Berkshire then you have picked well. Any Fiat dealer should have a decent stock of Punto's in their showroom for you to have a closer look.
