A lot of families are turning to cars like Nissan's Qashqai to provide hatchback-like performance with the versatility of a much larger MPV. But does it work? Are you better off spending less money on a hatchback, but risk not having the flexibility there to increase load space or passenger space, or do you bite the bullet and get exactly what you need?

The majority of car manufacturers have jumped on the bandwagon and are following Nissan's lead with their own versions of the Qashqai. Peugeot is no exception, with the 3008 looking to triumph over all its rivals.

The Peugeot 3008 was first introduced in 2009. Described as a compact crossover, the five seater car has already been given the accolade of Car of the Year 2010 by WhatCar?

It also became the worlds first ever diesel/electric hybrid passenger car. The Peugeot 3008 Hybrid4 went on sale in the Autumn of 2011. It has a 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine that produces 161bhp that is attached to a robotised manual six-speed transmission that drives the front wheels. In the rear is an 8kW generator that charges the nickel-metal hydride battery, along with a 36bhp AC electric motor to drive the rear wheels.

This results in four wheel drive without the need for transfer boxes, propeller shafts and differentials of a mechanical system, and also reduces the weight of the car considerably. By electricity alone, the 3008 Hybrid4 can reach up to 40mph. If driving at just 31mph, it can travel 2.5 miles.

Interested? If the answer is yes, then be aware that diesel hybrids are considerably more expensive to produce than petrol hybrids. But if you're not deterred then go and see the Peugeot 3008 Kent at your local dealer.
