The Vauxhall Insignia has been a popular choice for drivers since its release in 2008, winning the 2009 European Car of the Year. It was released as a replacement for the Vauxhall Vectra and was the first production car to feature a dual-function camera with traffic sign recognition.
Vauxhall has now announced that it will be adding its most powerful diesel engine to the Insignia range. The new engine offers an impressive 195bhp with 400Nm peak torque. With performance such as this, you would expect the car's fuel efficiency to be less impressive, yet it emits just 129g/km of CO2, putting it in tax band D which means car tax is just 95 per year. Fuel economy is equally as good, returning 57.6mpg.
The new model will be called the Insignia BiTurbo and will be available as a five door Hatchback and a Sports Tourer, in SRi, SRi Vx-line and Elite trims. The new engine is based on the current 2.0-litre engine but has up to 35bhp more power output and 50Nm more torque. This produces a 0-62 time of just 8.2 seconds which is almost a second faster than the standard engine.
Vauxhall has been able to produce these impressive figures due to sequential turbocharging. This means that the smaller turbo starts working at lower engine speeds, thus eliminating lag. At mid-range speeds, both turbochargers work together using a bypass valve. At faster speeds, all gases flow to the largest valve.
The new Vauxhall Insignia BiTurbo is available with a FlexRide adaptive damping system as standard. The clever system can 'learn' how the car is usually driven by reacting to driver inputs. It can then adapt its settings accordingly. Visit a Vauxhall Wolverhampton dealer to take a test drive.
