Having the perfect and obedient pooch doesn't happen overnight. You must engage in teaching your dog everything he/she must know, just like a real child. Don't crack under the pressure; instead read some of the dog-training tips below for some insightful ideas. You may not end up using all of the ideas, but they can help point you in the right direction.

When it is time to leash train your new dog or puppy, you must let him know that you are boss. Punishment does nothing but make him afraid of you and it doesn't actually correct the behavior. One thing that you should do, is make a short leash so that he has to stay right by your side. Do not let him lead you. You are the leader, not him.

Does your dog pull on the leash? This is one of the most common complaints owners have about their dogs, and it's also incredibly easy to remedy. Head to your nearest pet supply store and pick up a harness for just a few bucks - harnesses dramatically cut down on pulling, and make walks enjoyable again!

If possible, begin training your dog when they are young. A skill that is taught early on is often learned faster and easier than a skill that is introduced at a later age. In addition, older dogs have often picked up quite a few negative behaviors over the course of their life; these behaviors must be undone before the training process can begin.

Your dog should earn his freedom around your home. Too many pet owners give their dog free reign without earning it, which can lead to costly furniture replacement or even surgery when Fido eats something he shouldn't have. Test your dog's comfort levels and limits gradually, and in safe doses so you know his triggers.

Make sure everyone around the dog knows your rules. It can be confusing for a dog if the adults say not to give the dog food but the kids are sneaking food to him under the table. Make sure that everyone who spends time with the dog knows that you are trying to train him so that he gets consistent messages.

Give plenty of affection to your dog. It is important to give your dog lots of positive attention when he does the right thing. When he listens to a command or is a good dog, be generous with your praise and attention. This makes your dog happy, and a happy dog is easier to train.

Training a dog will be not only a challenge, but also a test in patience. You are going to want to start small and make sure that you reward the dog for his good behavior, so be sure you have plenty of snacks on hand! Whenever your dog does a good job or minds the rules you've set for him, reward him by giving him a small snack, so that he can associate the food with his good behavior.

Show your dog that you love them and are proud of them. It's easy in dog training to focus on the negative and try to show your dog that what they are doing is wrong. Make sure that you also work to accentuate the positive and praise them when they are doing well.

Train your dog by reinforcing positive behavior. This does not mean to punish your pet when he does something bad; instead, simply do not reinforce negative behavior. Negative enforcement might just make your dog scared of you. Positive reinforcement will ensure that your dog will want to do good things more often in order to receive treats and praise.

Reward your dog for obeying you, but only occasionally. Rewards like treats and excessive praise can be useful tools when training your dog. Just be careful that you do not condition them to expect this every time they do as they are are told. Reward them for following instruction, but do so randomly.

Positive reinforcement is the proven key to success in dog training. Figure out what reward will motivate your pet and use it. Strong smelling meats and cheese are usually very popular. It is imperative to always have treats handy when training. However, it is equally important to watch the caloric intake.

When you toilet train your dog, avoid accidents! Learn to recognize what your dog does when he needs to go out. Pacing, whining and snuffling are common. When you see this, don't delay. Get his leash and take him out to his designated toilet spot! Praise him for appropriate toileting. Eventually, he will learn to ask to go out.

Enforce the commands that you give your dog. Do not let up until they complete the task you have asked them to do. If you are not serious about making them do what you have commanded, then they will learn that they don't have to do it. Follow through is key to training.

Hopefully with the knowledge you just acquired about training your dogs you're feeling more confident with ways you can do just that. The information you learned here is good but remember that there's always more to learn, so keep on the lookout for new information and apply it whenever you can and you should see results soon.
