Ford has been producing the KA model since 1996; it is a small city car or supermini that sits below the small Ford Fiesta. The first generation model was available as a 3 door hatchback or convertible. When it was initially launched the KA provoked mixed reactions, some loved it while others loathed it " a bit like Marmite.
The first generation model was based heavily on the Fiesta, it was built on the same production line to minimise Ford's production costs. The edgy design of the KA was not for everyone yet it stayed in production with only minor facelifts for 12 years, usually a model undergoes a major revamp every 4 years. Those who liked the KA were very loyal and were repeat purchasers; hence Ford was very nervous to introduce a new model.
Finally in 2008 Ford took the plunge and launched the new Ford KA in Livingston, it is built in conjunction with Fiat therefore it is based on the same platform, as the Fiat 500. The KA is built alongside the 500 at Fiat's factory in Tychy Poland. Although it is based on the Fiat 500 the exterior has been designed by Ford and incorporates all the modern Ford Kinetic energy design components.
Safety wise the Ford KA achieved 4 stars out of 5 at the Euro NCAP safety tests. Standard safety features include driver and passenger single stage front airbags, ABS, immobiliser, hazard warning lights and remote central locking. In addition, there are front side airbags and curtain airbags and ESP (Electronic Stability Program) with HBA (Hydraulic Brake Assist) and HLA (Hill Launch Assist) that come at an extra cost.
The third generation Ford KA is rumoured to be due for launch in 2015, it will be based on the Ford Start Concept and it will be sold globally. The car will be made of recycled materials and have a 1.6-litre three-cylinder petrol engine.
