Japanese car maker Honda has been producing the Civic since 1973, up until 2000 it was classed as a subcompact car. Models produced from 2001 onwards are classed as compact cars. It is marketed as a fuel efficient front wheel drive car with great reliability and driveability. From the 4th generation model onwards the Civic became very popular with car enthusiasts and the modified car community. This tuning interest in the Civic was further fuelled by the Hollywood blockbuster "Fast and Furious", the film depicts Civic as "cool", "Fast" and highly "Tuneable".
The Honda Civic is renowned for how easy it is to swap around parts from one model to another, in particular the engine, gearbox and ECU. Many enthusiasts have taken lower powered models and done an "engine swap" for a bigger and more powerful engine. The Civic Type R models have also become highly popular with the younger generation but the higher price has put off some young drivers for now.
The newer models have not created such a stir in the enthusiast community due to their taller stance and higher centre of gravity. The high performance versions are still popular but with a different type of consumer, the type who prefer cars to be fast out of the box and are happy to live with that.
The 2012 Honda Civic in Stirling is due to go on sale in the next few months; it is an evolution of the current model with significant engine changes. The new model will come with the 2.2 litre diesel engine and all petrol engines will be hybrid " this is to ensure they adhere to new Euro V emissions regulations.
The entry level Civic will cost 16,500 and the top of the range will cost around 26,595. As standard it comes with Honda's Intelligent Multi-Information Display (i-MID) 5-inch dashboard screen which displays information including mpg, the idle stop status and climate and audio settings.
