The Mitsubishi Lancer is a Japanese saloon car with 4 doors, a boot and a various range of sensible engines. The Lancer Evolution model has the same qualities but with the addition of a turbo charged 2.0 litre engine that can put out more than 260 bhp at its basic level of tune. Originally the Evo model was only intended for the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) but the number of grey imports reaching countries like the UK meant Mitsubishi had to re-think its strategy.
Mitsubishi started selling the Mitsubishi Lancer in Reading as the Evolution model from 1998. The Evolution 4 was the first model to come into the UK via mainstream Mitsubishi dealers. The current model is the Evolution X (10th Generation). The new model comes with Mitsubishi's 6-speed Twin Clutch Sportronic Shift Transmission (TC-SST).
The end of the Lancer Evo as we know it may be near, new emissions and safety regulations may make the model obsolete in some countries. Demand for cars like this are still very strong, cars that push the limit of small engines and road legal racing technology will always be in demand. But as a brand Mitsubishi needs to introduce more fuel efficient and less CO2 emitting vehicles, this may lead to a new revolutionary model.
According to Mitsubishi this new model will still be as exciting as the Evolution but will be more fuel efficient and eco-friendly. Enthusiasts of the Evolution are concerned that these new measures will make the Lancer Evolution more tame and less fun to drive.
For now the Evolution X continues to be in production, no official statement has been made by Mitsubishi. I would love to get my hands on the Evo X, it is a great car and I really hope it is not discontinued without a decent replacement in place.
