There seems to be a new trend of introducing new off shoot models in the automotive industry. The Audi A5 is a good example of an off shoot model, Audi has taken its lead from the A4 Cabriolet and created a whole new model range around it now. BMW did something similar with the BMW X6 and X5, where the X6 was launched as the more sport model with coupe type style and design.
So far we have seen the launch of the VW EOS, the Audi A5, VW CC and the Mercedes-Benz CLS " all of which I would call off-shoot models. Now it appears BMW will be creating a new model off the X3 range. According to the press the German car manufacturer is going to invest $900m in its Spartanburg factory in South Caroline USA to build the new BMW X4.
The BMW X4 is being dubbed as the sporty version of the X3; it will be a four seater SUV like the BMW X6. The new car will be smaller and more agile than the X3, an X4 M model is also in the pipelines to appear at BMW Bedford sometime in the very near future.
The same X3 floorpan, drivelines, chassis and hard points will be used on the X4, but it will have its own unique styling and design. Just like the X6 the X4 will be less practical than the family orientated X3, with reductions in headroom and luggage capacity.
The BMW X4 is expected to come with a choice of four and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines mated to a six-speed manual, seven-speed double-clutch or optional eight-speed automatic gearbox. As with the X3, BMW does not plan a two-wheel-drive version, therefore it will not be in direct competition with the new and much adored Land Rover Range Rover Evoque.
