When the first generation of the Golf was unveiled in 1974 the GTI version took the hot hatch market by storm. There was nothing else quite like it in the market, it was fast, handled well and was affordable for most people. Over the years the Golf and the GTI have created a cult like following with many enthusiasts groups on and off line.
With several hot hatches now in the market consumers are a little spoilt for choice, but personally the Golf will always be the most well rounded off car. The latest generation of the Golf was launched in 2009; along with it the GTI model was also launched. But, this time there is a more powerful version of the Golf called the "R". The GTI comes with a 2.0 litre engine and 207 BHP, special edition GTI 35 models come with 232 bhp. The R comes with 266 bhp and was the range topping model.
Last summer Volkswagen launched the Golf Cabriolet and the Cabriolet R model. This soft top Golf comes with the same 266 bhp engine found in the hatchback. It can do 0-62 mph in less than 6 seconds and reach a top speed of 155 mph. On the inside it gets motorsport seats in dark blue carbon leather combined with Pure Grey Nappa leather. The seat backs are painted in piano black.
At the same time Volkswagen said they will be producing a GTI version too, the R model is the fastest open top Golf to be ever built and marks a return for the Golf in the soft top sector. The EOS will remain in production and sit above the Golf Cabriolet.
The reintroduction of the soft top has reassured enthusiasts of the used VW Golf in Scotland that VW has not given up on the model and there will be many more years of the Golf to enjoy.
