You might have thought you had a good dog, but you could have ended up with a bad one. The good news is that, with just a bit of basic training, your dog can become better behaved within just a short amount of time.

If you notice a sudden change in your dog's behavior, take him to a vet. If an animal is suffering from pain or an undiagnosed condition, it may react aggressively to certain stimuli or behave in an atypical manner. This acting out is the only way your pet can communicate with you in regards to a problem.

To have success in dog training, you need to be able to control it with commands. You have to show your dog that you are in control or he will not obey or respect you. Demonstrate your position of authority to your dog by leading the way whenever the two of you are walking.

When you bring that new dog or puppy home, you want to get the entire family involved in the training. While they may have a single person working with them regularly, getting everyone involved can enforce that they must always follow the rules and it will make it more consistent.

Challenge your dog to try new things and maintain the old things. Give him "quizzes" to make sure he still knows his stuff, even if you both know he does.

If you catch your puppy in the act of chewing on an inappropriate item, stop it right away. When your puppy knows what he is allowed to chew on, he is less likely to chew on your belongings when left to his own devices.

Keep your dog well exercised and active. Just like humans, dogs can become bored easily. Dogs with no enthusiasm will be harder to train than active dogs. Your dog will be more relaxed and willing to listen if he is exercised frequently. Make long walks or daily runs a part of your routine that you and your dog can look forward to.

If you are considering working with an animal behavior specialist, make sure you interview them and check out their reputation. As there is no set rule for the best way to train a dog, this aspect is open to interpretation and you want the animal behavior trainer to have the same ideals and thoughts as your own.

For a dog to become house trained you should always have them on the same feeding schedule everyday, so their elimination time is always the same. Before the dog goes to the bathroom on your carpet, you will know when it has to go outside. Using this schedule can teach your dog how to hold their piddle until the upcoming potty break.

Be cognitive of the duration of time you and your dog devote to training sessions. You will bore your dog if your spend a lot of time on just one thing. Aim for less than 10 minutes per session.

Your dog should not get to choose when he will and will not listen. Don't ever give your dog a command if you are unable to follow through with the enforcement of it.

When training a dog, always use consistent verbal and hand jesters. Dogs respond well to consistency and will soon associate a specific hand jester or verbal command with the appropriate action. You have to be consistent to stimulate your dog's memory. This will allow you to train your pet more effectively in a shorter period of time.

Give your puppy time to be okay with a crate by taking the training one small step at a time. When they've settled down with the gate open, slowly shut it and pass treats through the gate. Start off small, like 10 seconds at a time, and slowly move up the times. If they become upset, you are moving too fast.

Begin training your dog when it's still a young puppy. It's not absolutely necessary, but young dogs do better with training. The actual process of learning itself is much easier on a younger mind, hence the phrase "you can't teach an old dog new tricks." Your dog will carry his good behavior into adulthood.

Your dog needs to stay active during all phases of his life. Dogs are not animals that are meant to sit still all of the time. To have an enjoyable life, they need to be able to get out and run and work. Run with your dog, take it to the park or teach it to play Frisbee. While you are training your dog, make sure to always keep him active.

You need to let your dog be a dog, so give him some time to burn off that energy. Dogs require a nutritious diet, space to run in and activities and toys to keep them busy.

Learning your dogs individuality is an important step when training your dog. Through this improved comprehension, someone training a dog could learn to use only the most effective rewards and punishment. An individual who has taken the time to learn about their pet is more likely to succeed in his or her training efforts.
