Hearing impairment is a disability where a person is unable to detect sound completely or partially. Hearing impairment can happen mainly due to three reasons and they are Environmental situations, Diseases, Neurological disorders, hereditary disorders, prenatal exposure to disease and trauma. Let's take a closer look at each one of them.

Environmental situations: Hearing impairment is often caused due to environmental hazards especially noise pollution or other ear defections. Dangerous Decibel levels of firecrackers, gunshot and explosions car traffic and Listening to loud noises for long periods can make eardrums relatively less sensitive, which makes it difficult for ears to catch quiet sounds that are difficult to pickup. Nasal allergies especially which block the eustachian tubes that makes hearing very difficult. Prolonged exposure to loud music through headphone also reduces our listening ability.

Diseases: Several diseases are known to hamper our hearing ability. Illness such as meningitis, cytomegalovirus, chicken pox and mumps can significantly affect our ears sound sensitivity. Diseases can cause chocking or blocking of nerves which can affect our eardrum sensitivity.

Neurological disorders: Neurological disorders also have an effect on hearing. Many diseases such as stroke weaken our immune system attacks that shield our nerves. Once the nerves are destroyed or damaged they can't be repaired or replaced.

Hereditary disorders: Some types of hearing impairment are due to hereditary. This happens because of flawed genes. In maximum number of cases, this type of deafness is due to malformations of the inner ear.

Prenatal exposure to disease: Prenatal exposure to disease causes deafness at birth as the baby is exposed to certain diseases in uterus. This can also be a reaction to certain drugs and chemicals.

Trauma: A fractured skull or significant changes in air pressure can also cause deafness as they affect the nerves of ears.
