If you grew up in the 70s and 80s like me you'll be familiar with the Renault 5 and the GT Turbo, what a piece of machinery. As a child I adored the Renault 5, unfortunately I never did get to own or drive one. Luckily for me I may have just got a second chance! Renault is planning to launch a new version of the Renault 5.
According to a Renault insider a reborn Renault 5 is under discussion and could complement the next Twingo as well as the forthcoming fourth-generation Clio. The source said, "We're seriously thinking about bringing back the Renault 5 to underpin the Clio. For it to be a credible car it would have to offer more than a Twingo. That would mean it wouldn't have to just be good dynamically, but would have to introduce a notion of the revolution that the 5 brought to the market in 1972, both in terms of technology and positioning."
The Renault 5 has great historic ties for Renault; it was the first supermini with its 3 door hatchback layout. It was a European best-seller for most of the 1970s and lived until 1985. Like the modern Fiat 500 and VW Beetle expect to see many reference to the old car on the new car. I would love to see the signature rectangular headlights, slender grille, unusually low crease in its flanks, innovative impact-absorbing bumpers and vertical tail-lights.
I just hope Renault does not ruin the Renault 5 for me and other enthusiasts who have a soft spot for the old 5 and GT Turbo models. The turbo model in particular had a cult like following in the enthusiast circles. Many tuned and modified their GT Turbos to make them even faster and unique. An original Renault 5 GT Turbo is very rare and expensive if you can find one with original Renault repairs.
