In the UK we have certain affection for Fords; it might have something to do with the fact that the Dagenham plant in Essex/East London played a major role in the success of Ford not just in the UK but around Europe too. In the 70s and 80s the Dagenham plant employed a huge percentage of local people, if you came from Dagenham or Essex then you knew someone that worked at the plant.
When the Ford Mondeo was launched in 1993 it was a very important model for Ford. The automotive industry had gone through a very bad year in 1992 and the new Mondeo would have to do well to turn 1993 in to a good year for Ford. After some initial teething problems the Mondeo started selling well. It quickly became popular amongst fleet drivers as well as families.
Since 1993 four generations of the Mondeo have been produced, demonstrating the success of the model. The current model was launched in 2007 and was a significant move away from the previous model. The current model is based on the EUCD platform that has been co-developed with Volvo and is used for the Ford Galaxy and S-Max.
The current Mondeo comes with a wide choice of engines ranging from a 1.6 litre 110 PS petrol to a 2.2 litre TDCi 200 PS diesel. The most powerful engine is a petrol 2.0 litre EcoBoost that has 240 PS. Transmission options include a 5 speed manual, 6 speed manual, 6 speed automatic and a 6 speed double-clutch automatic.
The fifth generation Mondeo is due for launch in 2013; it is heavily influenced but the concept Ford Evos model shown last year. The front and rear of the new Ford Mondeo in Speke has definitely taken inspiration from the concept. No launch dates or prices have been announced by Ford yet so watch this space!
