Mercedes Benz of Germany has been producing the S Class since 1954; it is a luxury saloon car that has dictated that segment of the market ever since its inception. The S Class has been at the forefront of the latest safety equipment, the latest in car entertainment and the most advanced driver aids. Once on the S Class these features then dribble down to the smaller Mercedes models and eventually on to other manufacturer cars too.
Recently mass car makers such as Ford and Toyota have started to be the first to the market with new and innovative technology but the S Class still leads the field. In 2011, 5 years into the current model's life cycle it was still winning awards, in fact in that year it won 3 reputable awards. It was named Best Luxury Car in the Auto Express New Car Awards, then it was named "Best Luxury Car" in the Fleet World Honour Award and it was also named "Best Luxury Car" by What Car?
At the 2010 What Car? awards the Mercedes S Class in Hampshire was awarded with the "Best Luxury Car" award along with the What Car? Safety Award as recognition for "Attention Assist" - the unique and innovative drowsiness detection system. In the past decade the S Class has won the What Car? Luxury car award 9 times, that's a record and goes to show how the S Class is continually evolving and keeping ahead of its competition.
A new version of the S Class is due to go on sale next year, looking at some spy shots of a test mule it looks as though Mercedes Benz have given the S Class some curves. The new model is expected to adopt key styling cues from the F700, the swoopy concept car displayed at the Detroit show in 2007.
