The new Mercedes B Class in Hampshire is going to be completely revamped and will go on sale next year. The B Class sits in between the A Class and Class models " it is a medium size family car with a lot of space and practicality. The current B Class uses the same front engine drive set up as the A Class and uses the same sandwich floor system too.
The sandwich floor system was put in place as a safety measure; in the event of a front end collision the floor folds under itself and the engine and transmission go under the passenger cabin " helping to prevent major injuries or fatalities.
The next generation B Class is said to be under testing with some spy shots revealed. The new B class uses new Renault engines and is a different car from the ground up. The sandwich floor has been removed, as it proved to be too expensive and complicated. Because of the switch to conventional body engineering, Mercedes Benz will drop its own front-drive engines, which were designed as part of the sandwich platform crash structure.
The new B class will be the first of Mercedes Benz's MFA platform, initially 5 models will be based on this including the new A Class, a mini SUV and a new saloon model. All MFA derived models will be built to be able to accommodate three alternative powertrains: plug-in electric (E-Cell), petrol-electric range-extender (E-Cell Plus) and fuel cell (F-Cell).
Looking at the spy shots Mercedes Benz have stuck to conventional rear doors rather than sliding ones. Front and rear lights have been changed to incorporate LED lights; the headlights obviously have daytime running lights now. The inside in generally looks more spacious, without the sandwich floor there is a bit more room, especially head room.
