In the UK Japanese car maker Suzuki is not that well known as a car manufacturer. Suzuki is recognised more for its motorbikes here. In 2004 Suzuki changed the perspective of many Brits when it launched the new Suzuki Swift " it is a small hatchback that is available as a 3 or 5 door hatchback. In some markets it is available as a 4 door saloon too.

The third and current generation of the Swift has been around since 2010, it is now built in Hungary to help supply the demand created in Europe. This model is more of an evolution of the last one rather than a revolution. Subtle changes have been made around the headlights and the rear boot area.

There are now three engine derivatives to choose from, the 1.2 litre petrol engine has 93 bhp and has "adequate" power, but the 1.3 diesel seems a bit gutsier with its 74 bhp. The largest engine is the 1.6 litre that has 134 bhp.

Last month Suzuki launched the new Swift Sport; it is a sportier looking version of the standard Swift. Now, when you normally think of a hot hatch the Swift is not the first to come to mind, but this new Suzuki Swift in Kent does tingle the taste buds. The little hot hatch can do 0-62 mph in less than 9 seconds; it uses the 134 bhp 1.6 litre petrol engine.

Fuel economy is not compromised by the sporty drive; it can still deliver just over 44 miles to the gallon on a combined cycle. If you want an alternative hot hatch then the Swift is definitely worth considering, book a test drive and really experience the fun it offers! The 1.2 litre would be a great first car; they are not that expensive, are good on fuel and have proven to be very reliable.
