Vauxhall have had it tough recently with regard to its new model the Ampera as there were fears of post-crash battery fires after American tests, however, the 2012 Vauxhall Ampera has made it onto the shortlist for the European Car of the Year award.
The award began with 35 original contenders who had been voted for by 59 motoring journalists from over 20 countries and has been dwindled down to a shortlist of 7. The final 7 cars are due to be put through a series of test drives before the winner is picked.
If you are wondering whether the award is of any importance then you only have to look at how seriously the journalists take it. The results will be announced live at the Geneva Motor Show on 5th March, 2012.
The shortlist for the award includes the Volkswagen Up, Ford Focus, Toyota Yaris, Citroen DS5 and the Range Rover Evoque and Chrysler Volt. While you may not think the Ampera has much of a chance of winning the award after considering the competition it actually stands a great chance having considered the criteria used by the judges in deciding who to name the winner. The criteria used will include design, economy, functionality, performance, environmental credentials and innovation.
The Ampera is bound to score well when it comes to innovation although it may struggle to shake off its relatively high price tag. It seems Vauxhall are just happy to be in the running - "We are delighted that the Ampera is among the 2012 Car of the Year finalists," says Duncan Aldred, the Vauxhall Chairman and Managing Director.
I must admit, I hadn't heard too much about the Ampera up until recently but will be arranging a test drive at
