Audi has been producing the A3 since 1996, it is a small family car based on the same platform as the Volkswagen Golf. The Audi A3 was initially launched to be a sporty alternative to the Golf and only came in 3 door format. Over the years the A3 has evolved and now there is a 5 door hatchback as well as a cabriolet.
The current A3 model has been with us for quite a while now; it was launched in 2003 and has received facelifts over the years. In 2004 Audi launched the five door sportback model and a new single frame grille. In 2008 the range underwent some major changes, daytime running lights were added and the front and rear got reworked.
The Audi S3 was launched in 2006 and marked the return of the S3 badge; in 2011 the RS3 was launched. The fabric top cabriolet was launched in 2008 introducing another premium convertible in the Audi range.
Audi offer many engine options in the A3 to make it appealing to a wide demographic; the newer models come with a couple of TSI engines. VW's TSI engines use turbo and super charging to boost power while keeping fuel consumption and CO2 emissions down.
Pictures of the next generation Audi A3 in London have been shown online, according to some online forums there will be four body styles on offer. As with its predecessors the new model will use the VW Golf platform, in this case it is the MQB platform. Thanks to the new platform the next generation A3 will be lighter, safer and offer a host of drive and infotainment options.
It is anticipated that Audi will officially launch the new model next month at the Geneva Motor Show with sales expected to start in September. Prices will start at 15,500 for the entry level model.
