All the models in the Kona Dew series represent good value street hybrid bikes, from a well-respected producer, with tons of style.
They are hybrids that are predominantly directed towards street riding - to work and back say. However like any good hybrid they will also take you out on the lanes at the weekend. What exactly do the various models have to offer?
All are aluminium-framed, using 7005 alloy, butted for strength. The nicely sloped top tube gives you greater standover clearance and means that all the versions are unisex. The geometry varies somewhat through the series. All will take mudguards - almost certainly essential on a commuting bike.
They all run on 700 mm road (rather than MTB) wheels, and all aside from the FS suspension model carry Kona’s own Project Two aluminium fork. The triple chainset fitted to all models gives utmost flexibility on hills and for road speed.
The different models show enhancements and upgrades in the components you would suppose - gears, brakes and wheelsets.
The Kona Dew City is the entry-level bike of the collection:-
o 21 gears with practical ratios, from simple Shimano components. The EZ Fire shifters are superb to use.
o Tektro V-brakes. Powerful and straightforward to maintain.
o Kona Comfort saddle, flat pedals and wide 35mm tyres. A sensible, usable bike.
o Priced very competitively.
The original Kona Dew is the next bike in the collection. In many respects it's the same as the Dew City. Specific to this model:-
o 24 gears in three slightly wider ranges.
o Somewhat nicer wheel rims and front derailleur.
o More robust V-brakes form Tektro.
o All this adds up to a very practical bike suitable for nearly all situations.
Moving up the range we come to the Kona Dew Plus. The major change here from the Dew is in the brakes:-
o Hydraulic disc brakes from Shimano for improved stopping power and wet-weather performance.
o Shimano Deore rear derailleur gives smoother gear changes.
Next up the series is the Kona Dew Deluxe:-
o 27 gears from the 9-speed Shimano cassette.
o Enhanced front derailleur, wheelsets, brakes and gear shifters.
o A change to the frame - a superbly tapered top tube.
o Narrower 32 mm tyres for greater road performance, perhaps at the expense of some off-road capabilities.
The Kona Dew FS is the only model in the range to feature suspension:-
o A Suntour suspension fork with lockout will help you to handle bad roads or rough ground.
o More shock-absorption comes from the suspension seatpost.
o More slope to the top tube.
o Additional help on the hills from smaller chainrings.
o Improved shifting between chainrings from a better front derailleur
o Great value for a suspension bike.
Top of the range is the Kona Dr Dew, a no-compromise fast street bike, for quick commuting:-
o Project Two aluminium fork, and incorporating the tapered-tube frame.
o Hydraulically-operated disc brakes by Shimano - enhanced stopping power, particularly in the rain.
o The use of more Shimano road bike components, from the Sora range, prove that this is a bike designed for road performance.
o The wheel rims are sleeker, as is the saddle.
o Enhanced handlebars and pedals.
o Smart grey paintwork, enhanced by the decals means that this is a bike that will get seen.
Such is the choice available in the Kona Dew series that there is a bike for everybody here, and at superb prices too.
