For a time now I've been trying to find a bike to match my actual kind of riding:-
" Although I like to cover the miles on the road, a genuine road bike with drop handlebars and an uncomfortable saddle wouldn't be right. I commute to work by bike, so want something comfy that will also carry a bit of luggage. Mudguards are vital too - I can't turn up at work covered in mud.
" I like to venture occasionally down the canal towpath, but I don't want a mountain bike with huge thick tyres that is hard to pedal on the road - and the road is where I will spend most of my time.
There's certainly no lack of choice in the market, with lots of suppliers trying to grab a share of the action. So it's not straightforward to find your way through all the possibilities. Most bikes I checked out just didn't suit at all - nearly all of them didn't have the right design attitude They were okay for leisure riding. But they just did not have the pace I was after. Then I found the Cannondale Quick.
It didn't take me long to come to a decision that, in the Quick, I had discovered the kind of bike that would suit me ideally:-
" Light alloy frame, looking like it was built for speed. The bikes higher up the series have carbon forks too.
" A good range of gear ratios for (relatively) effortless hill-climbing. Once again, the superior bikes in the collection have really nice road bike components- something not often found on a hybrid bike.
" Mini V-brakes which have plenty of power but are simple to maintain, in contrast to the disc brakes you so frequently find.
" The wheels on the higher models are just stunning - paired spokes that look as if they have come off a road bike. OK, a standard arrangement with more spokes will be more robust, but for riding on the road, just great.
" The prices are not bad. It's true that there are cheaper bikes available. The Quick range starts at roughly £600. If you have the cash, you can spend up to £1100 - but this is somewhat outside my price range.
So after doing a bit of study on the Net, I went along to the local dealer to try one out. I decided on a model from roughly the middle of the range, which appeared to have all the features that were most important to me. But at the same time not too expensive for me.
I was extremely impressed with what I found. The bike felt pretty lively and sprightly, yet steady. Road vibration was not at all appreciable, thanks to the carbon forks, and the saddle and handlebars made for a very relaxed riding position, perfect for extended trips. Gear selection was very smooth, with plenty of low ratios for getting up the hills.
I could picture myself looking forward to getting on the bike, even after a hard day at work.
I didn't hesitate. The order was placed. My bike arrives next week. Can't wait.
